Norse Wars: Luke Skywalker cuts off Grendel's arm.

Image
Luke cutting off the wampa's arm after reclaiming his lightsaber in the ice cave is much like a combination of Beowulf tearing off Grendel's arm in Heorot and killing Grendel's mother with the ancient magic  sword he retrieves in the monsters' cavernous grotto lair. We could also point out that Anakin & Luke both lose hands whilst fighting a Dark Side figure, sort of like Tyr's sacrifice of his hand to Fenrir , and that the name of ice planet Hoth appears to be linguistically derivative of Norse God Höðr as Høtherus, this latter name being Saxo Grammaticus' more heroic version of that figure in his Gesta Danorum: The History of the Danes . Does all this make the technologically scavenging Jawas & Ugnauts species of dwarves ? Is the blaster-wielding aggro Princess Leia in essence a  space-shieldmaiden ? Are nigh-invulnerable Krayt dragons really children of Níðhöggr? Would the Emperor's Crimson Guard be derived from Viking Varangians? Is Snoke'...

the godpoles speak in Twin Peaks.

David Lynch's cult phenom Twin Peaks  has summoned much extrapolation, and while revisiting the quirky town full of beloved characters and dark doings, we've noticed some NorsePlay hiding in the pines. Note that Lynch's maternal grandparents were Finnish-Swedish emigrants, so our following speculative observations may very well come from our auteur director perhaps being storytold Norse Lore in his childhood, which might explain alot about his amazingly strange vision. First & foremost, we realized the Log Lady bears a prophetic godpole that speaks to her, which in turn makes her  the town völva . There is an insistent "Would you know more?" seeress-ness from the  Völuspá in her pressing of needed but unwanted & doom-filled knowledge on those she talks to. Larger than this, the whispering of the trees being the voices of the Gods is an ancient idea at play as Tacitus' Germania speaks of sacred groves and later sources talk about specific holy trees...

A clue to the one ring of Norse Lore's current whereabouts could be this NorsePlay sign once available on Amazon, but now's a broken link. [Perhaps Jeff Bezos wears it?] #    #    # Guillermo Maytorena IV knew there was something special in  the Norse Lore when he picked up a copy of the d'Aulaires'  Norse Gods and Giants  at age seven. Since t hen he's been fascinated by the truthful potency of Norse Mythology, passionately read & studied, embraced Ásatrú, launched the Map of Midgard project, and spearheaded the neologism/brand NorsePlay.   If you have e mployment/ opportunities in  investigative mythology,  field research, or product development to offer, do contact him .

Since NorsePlay's in Tucson, we're taking a moment to mention Arizona Opera 's putting on Das Rheingold , Wagner's classic remix of Norse Mythology. so as a kid I binged watched Wagner's Ring.

Richard Wagner arguably perpetrated the most grandiose NorsePlay in 1876 with his Ring Cycle featuring Germanic versions of the Norse Gods. I sat enraptured for the whole 17-hour, four-opera run of the James Levine conducted Metropolitan Opera 1990 presentation on PBS. #    #    # Guillermo Maytorena IV knew there was something special in  the Norse Lore when he picked up a copy of the d'Aulaires'  Norse Gods and Giants  at age seven.
