at the speed of Bifrost.

Image
If we explore the idea of the Bifrost as a traversable bridge of light, we court the very possible concept of hard light as a vehicle for travel that would also be as fast as light for those who step onto it. behold the rainbow bridge.

The Rainbow Bridge manifests in Taipei, Taiwan. Given the mirage points of rainbows, touchdowns for Bifrost in Asia would be just as possible as anywhere else on Midgard . #    #    # Guillermo Maytorena IV knew there was something special in  the Norse Lore when he picked up a copy of the d'Aulaires'  Norse Gods and Giants  at age seven. do not sound The Trumpet of Terror.

For NorsePlay this is like chocolate & peanut butter & bacon combined: The Trumpet of Terror is a Norse Mythology-based Choose Your Own Adventure book from 1986! Peter Lloyd's luminous Yggdrasil.

Image
Illustrator Peter Lloyd's depiction of the Norse Cosmos from National Geographic's Our Universe (1980). Lloyd (1944–2009) did alot of beautiful space & robot themed artwork, exploring a futurized art deco aesthetic, and even did some concept art for the original Tron . This image from one of our favourite childhood astronomy books is unforgettable. The one-eyed Odin at top left and giant-sized Heimdallr at the foot of the rainbow bridge are interesting style choices, as is the eagle emplaced as the canopy of Yggdrasil. more Norse Legend than drink.

Image
While we can't recommend Samuel Adams' Norse Legend Sahti brew for drinking, we can admire its Yggdrasil adorned label, accented with jelling knotwork roots, Bifrost , ... and its sentient panoply of staring eyes in its branches. [... and the colour text on the back label. Legend, indeed.] [In contrast, we highly recommend filling your horn with their Cinder Bock for drinking instead.] #    #    # Guillermo Maytorena IV knew there was something special in  the Norse Lore when he picked up a copy of the d'Aulaires'  Norse Gods and Giants  at age seven. Bifrost-ed doughnuts!

Image
Bifrost-ed doughnuts! Well, actually it's the Over-The-Rainbow donuts at Amy's Donuts (which just opened up in Tucson near Stone & Fort Lowell), but that doughnut hole could very well be the Well of Wyrd, and this could be from Valhalla's dessert tray. #    #    # Guillermo Maytorena IV knew there was something special in  the Norse Lore when he picked up a copy of the d'Aulaires'  Norse Gods and Giants  at age seven. vintage book illustration in Bifrosticolour.

Ran across this beautiful Norse Lore double-truck text framing illustration while browsing the Arizona Renaissance Festival's Lady Chamberlin's book stall. From My Book Of History: Volume 3 -- New Nations (1931 hardback, p 218-9), drawn by Donn P Crane (1878-1944). Think the set of three was there for $40. #    #    # Guillermo Maytorena IV knew there was something special in  the Norse Lore when he picked up a copy of the d'Aulaires'  Norse Gods and Giants  at age seven. NorsePlay'd tarot.

Image
In the first blush of the New Age movement, there was a commercial need to Tarot-ify anything and everything, including Norse Mythology. The retrofitting of a Renaissance period divinatory card system onto far more ancient Norse Lore is upon further examination a klugy appropriation, but it makes for some interesting art and explores thinking about how elements in Norse Lore are associated with their ideas. Note the burning of the halls which produces the smoke that disrupts the light that makes up Bifrost, and the jötunn coveting Máni, the moon, inadvertently posed like a tourist gianting a monument with false perspective in a travel photo. no nail polish for Naglfar.

Image
CrowsToes released a Nine Realms Collection of n ail polish with colours corresponding to each of the Norse Worlds , plus a heat-treated hue for Mjölnir, darkly purpled feather tones for Huginn & Muninn, and a glistening Bifrost! (We're sort of surprised at not having a Naglfar nude shade in the lineup.) TSR's Viking Gods mini-boardgame.

Image
Back in 1982, TSR put out a series of clamshell paper & chit games, one of which was the gem Viking Gods . A two-player game that enacted Ragnarök where one of you rallied the Æsir and the other controlled the adversaries, with the hex map showing a swirly oil endpaper patterned Bifrost, an icy frost giants area, and a deadly vortex in the middle from which Hela randomly emerges to take final victims from both sides. There were basic introductory rules & then an advanced ruleset where the Gods/adversaries had special powers, but it's pretty even chances in this one. After spotting it in the store as a kid who'd spent his allowance already, one finally fell into my hands last year which the wife & I played, and it was fun-fun. Yes, the Gods do play with wyrd dice, Mr Einstein. [And a closeup of those Fire Giants.] #    #    # Guillermo Maytorena IV knew there was something special in  the Norse Lore when he picked up a copy of the d'...

iceland: a travelogue

Image
Day -1 : Deplaned! ... and it begins with me sprinting full out from one end of Phoenix's mile-long Sky Harbor Airport to the very last concourse, which of course looks very action film terrorist red flag-like. The plane (if you can call the wee Red Bull can with wings an actual plane) from Tucson was 45 minutes late getting in due to confidence inspiring "maintenance issues", which left me with less than 10 minutes to make my connection to Denver. "The door is closed." I can see the plane through the window, still connected to the jetway. "But the plane is  right there ." "The door is closed. You'll have to go talk to customer service," she states in flat disciplinarian tones with barely veiled punitive relish. By contrast the sweet great aunt US Airways desk agent's deeply apologetic about me losing a whole day in Iceland, and I simply can't get pissed at a nice old lady who's doing her best to get me out as early as ...
