Iceman & His Amazing Frost Jotunness!

Image
In the  Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends episode  The Vengeance Of Loki (1981 CE,  S1 E10), there's a total babe alert in deposed Frost Jotunness Queen Zerona : [blue jotunness fever, indeed!] In the show Zerona finds a quick admiration for the flirtatious & like-elemental Iceman who helps her out, first against usurper Ymir , and then to actually reclaim Jotunheim from Surtur himself! [watch this near-extraworldly romance unfold here !]  Collegiate Bobby's libidinous and not-quite altruistic gallantry in helping Zerona matches accounts of the desirability of some giant maidens. In the Norse Lore, when we look at the genealogy of the Æsir , we see an early intermarriage of proto-Gods Búri  & Borr, the former probably marrying/mating with an unnamed jotunness, and his son who marries giantess Bestla to produce Odin & his brothers. Later we have Thor with jotunness Jarnsaxa producing his three children, and ice maiden  Gerðr ...

Gerðr of the shimmering arms.

Detail from The Goddess Gerd by UK sculptor George Blackall Simonds (1847–1929 CE). Gerðr of The Shimmering Arms is her most-known kenning. This could be yet another attribute derived/associated with the Northern Lights as they shimmer across the sky, so the sculpture depicts the jotun maiden with her arms upraised, and a possible dawn-esque Goddess halo of radiance made of hair, so her shimmering epithet could also perhaps alternately be a Midnight Sun association, or more simply the sun's reflection dazzling one's eyes off of the ice , or all the above really given the polyvalent nature of the Norse Gods, but the beauty of the proverbial & ideal pale-limbed lovely is definitely at work. And when Freyr beholds this attribute from his sneaking a view from Odin's throne  Hlidskjalf , the D'Aulaires show the phenomena of her shimmering as the first thing of Gerðr he sees. #    #    # Guillermo Maytorena IV knew there was something special in...

when you behold your desires.

Image
In a moment of curiosity, Freyr sits on Odin's high seat from which all the worlds can be seen. [ Freyr on Hlidskjalf   (1930) by Kather ine Pyle.] Because who wouldn't want a chance to see everything? But as Odin sits there to seek wisdom, Freyr instead beholds all through eyes of desire , and in looking, he sees the most beautiful thing he's ever seen, Gerðr of the Shimmering Arms, a jotuness so pallid in form, and comely in beauty that Freyr's stricken with a lovesickness he's never known before. [ Skirnir's Message to Gerd (1908) by W. G. Collingwood.] In that moment Freyr sees all the worlds, and beholds the one he wants most of all. The climb into that forbidden seat allows him the advantage of seeing the best possibility of out of all the women in existence, and in that very same instant he knows his Wyrd is hard forged. The action of sitting somewhere high for insight could be referencing the Nordic magic ritual of útiset...

giving the fairest feet a fairer shot.

While there are cosmological reasons that Skaði & Njörðr don't work out, NorsePlay asks what if instead of calling it off because there wasn't an agreeable place to live together that they had given say just a Monday a week to see each other? Not her mountain hall, nor his seaside home, but somewhere between where no wolves nor seabirds would upset them, just a space for them alone? She could bring venison, and he shark, they could cook over the hearthfire, and instead of worrying over the obligations of their divine purviews, they could just fully enjoy each other, admiring & appreciating the differences, realizing that between them they ruled even more together than apart, and finding that common ground on a ... well, common ground. And they could've added BBQs & kubb, or hnefatafl  on Sundays with Freyr & Freyja, just to try it out. It's all a rather big maybe, but given the social weights & measures of Viking-period Icelandic society &...

smooth talking the Mead of Poetry.

Image
Bolverk, secretly Odin, runs serious game on Gunnlöd to score some quality time with her & win the ultimate in free drinks -- the Mead of Poetry. Note the huge Óðrerir vessel in the foreground from which we can infer where Thor gets his drinking skills from, since Odin is supposed to empty that in a single draught. court that jötuness.

There's a fair amount of attraction to the female of the jötunn species in the Norse Lore. This brave warrior may have a difficult suit ahead of him, but some ladies are worth the extra trouble. While forefather Ymir was never described as handsome, we suspect the nurturing milk of Auðhumbla may have imparted a beauty to some of his descendants.
